Week 6 – Defining The Motion

Introduction to Debating (all ages)

In Lesson 6, we learnt how the first speaker of the Proposition defines the motion at the start of a debate. By doing this, everyone in the debate will know what the debate is about and its limits.

To recap, we define the motion by answering the following questions:

  1. Who is doing it?
  2. What exactly are they doing?
  3. How are they doing it?
  4. When are they doing it?

Take a look at the video below and have a go at defining the motion for the debate, “This House believes that everyone should go to university”. Remember, a definition must also be clear and fair!
